Banda Aceh, Friday, 15 May 2026 — The LPK Pekanbaru Aceh Service Unit received a report from a local resident, Helmaidi, from Labuhan Haji, South Aceh Regency, regarding a crocodile that had become trapped in his crab net.
Following the report, Helmaidi contacted the LPK Pekanbaru Aceh Service Unit to seek assistance. Based on initial information from the community, crocodiles had not previously been observed in the river where the incident occurred. The team then carried out coordination with local residents and relevant stakeholders to prepare for the handling of the animal.

On Saturday, 16 May 2026, the LPK Pekanbaru Aceh Service Unit, together with Yayasan Fifan Laut Nusantara, immediately travelled to Labuhan Haji, South Aceh Regency, to respond to the reported human-crocodile conflict. Upon arrival at the location, the team conducted an examination and identified the animal as a saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), measuring 78 cm in total length and 22 cm in width.
Arie Muhardy from Yayasan Fifan Laut Nusantara, who also served as the veterinarian in charge, confirmed that the crocodile was in healthy condition and ready to be released back into the wild.
Before leaving the handling site, the team provided outreach to the local community regarding the protection of crocodile species. The team also advised residents to remain cautious when carrying out activities around the river, as there was a possibility that an adult crocodile may also be present in the area.

After the assessment and community outreach, the team proceeded to transport the saltwater crocodile to a suitable release site. The selected location is known to be a natural habitat for saltwater crocodiles, with several reports indicating frequent crocodile sightings in the area.
The release was successfully carried out in the early hours of Sunday, 17 May 2026. The team confirmed that the crocodile was able to swim and move normally after being released into its natural habitat.
