Education and Awareness
Fifan Foundation carries out education and awareness activities to communicate conservation messages in ways that are easy to understand, locally relevant, and connected to the daily lives of coastal communities.
This program aims to build public understanding that marine and coastal ecosystems provide essential benefits, including food sources, livelihoods, coastal protection, biodiversity habitats, and climate resilience. It also emphasizes that environmental protection is a shared responsibility among communities, government institutions, academics, conservation organizations, and the private sector.
Education
Seagrass Planting with Students in Pulo Aceh
On 1–2 November 2025, Fifan Foundation together with Sahabat Lestari Indonesia and students of SMA 1 Pulo Aceh, carried out a seagrass planting activity in Pulau Nasi, Pulo Aceh District, Aceh Besar Regency.
This activity was part of a project-based learning initiative that integrated scientific knowledge, environmental conservation, and local coastal wisdom. Through this program, students did not only learn conservation theory in the classroom, but also participated directly in field activities to better understand the importance of maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems.
By involving students in hands-on conservation practice, Fifan Foundation aims to inspire young generations to become more aware, responsible, and actively involved in protecting coastal and marine environments.
Marine Waste and Plastic Pollution
Awareness in Haloban
In 2025–2026, Fifan Foundation supported the Pulau Haloban community in maintaining the sustainability of marine ecosystems through marine debris clean-up activities, particularly focusing on plastic waste.
The high consumption of plastic has created serious impacts on the marine environment. It is estimated that plastic waste makes up a major portion of solid waste found in the ocean. The presence of plastic waste in marine environments is often caused by improper waste disposal, poor waste management systems, and limited local waste handling facilities.
Through this initiative, Fifan Foundation supports community awareness and collective action to reduce plastic pollution, protect marine habitats, and create cleaner and safer coastal environments.
Change Behavior Project
The Change Behavior Project focuses on encouraging communities to adopt more responsible and environmentally friendly behaviors in protecting marine and coastal ecosystems. This program aims to reduce harmful practices such as littering in coastal areas, disposing plastic waste into the sea, disturbing protected species, and using unsustainable practices that may threaten marine biodiversity.
Through educational and participatory approaches, Fifan Foundation supports communities in understanding how daily activities can affect ecosystem health and long-term sustainability. The program also promotes practical actions, such as keeping coastal areas clean, reducing plastic waste, reporting stranded or accidentally caught marine animals, and supporting responsible fisheries practices.
In April–May 2026, Fifan Foundation initiated the Battery Project as part of its behavioral change initiative. This project educates children on how to protect their ocean while helping communities build a cleaner and safer environment — a place where coral reefs can recover, fishers can sustain their livelihoods, and Pulau Banyak can remain a beautiful and healthy archipelago for future generations.
The project is designed as an educational game for local children. Participants collect used batteries from coastal areas and villages, which are then stored safely and sent for recycling. Each child receives “eco points” for every used battery they submit.
In addition, the project also supports fishing villages in Haloban and Ujung Sialit by donating battery chargers. This initiative aims to stop the habit of throwing used flashlight batteries into the sea by providing fishers and local communities with access to free battery charging facilities.
Through this simple but meaningful approach, the Battery Project encourages children, fishers, and communities to take part in protecting the ocean from hazardous waste.

Training and Workshop
Training and workshop activities are carried out to strengthen the technical capacity of local communities, field teams, government partners, and relevant stakeholders in marine species monitoring, conservation response, and sustainable ecosystem management.
These activities support knowledge transfer, field skills development, and collaboration among institutions. By combining scientific methods with local participation, Fifan Foundation helps improve the quality of conservation actions in coastal and island communities.
Dugong Population Monitoring Training
The dugong (Dugong dugon) is a highly threatened marine mammal and is legally protected. One of the most effective ways to obtain information on dugong presence and population is through direct visual monitoring in the field.
In line with the National Action Plan for Dugong Conservation 2026–2030, visual observation is one of the scientifically recommended methods for dugong population monitoring.
To support this effort, Fifan Foundation, together with the National Research and Innovation Agency, BRIN, with support from BKSDA Aceh and LKKPN Pekanbaru under the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, conducted a training on dugong population monitoring using visual observation methods.
The training was held on 28–30 April 2026 at Tailana Island Resort, Kepulauan Banyak Barat District, Aceh Singkil Regency. This training aimed to strengthen the capacity of field teams and local stakeholders to identify, observe, and record dugong presence in the Banyak Islands.
Through this activity, Fifan Foundation supports science-based monitoring and collaborative conservation efforts for the protection of dugongs and their important habitats.
Expected Outcomes
Through the Education and Training program, Fifan Foundation aims to create long-term and sustainable impacts, including:
- Increased community understanding of marine and coastal conservation.
- Stronger environmentally friendly behavior among coastal communities.
- Greater public participation in environmental monitoring and reporting.
- Improved local community capacity to respond to conservation issues.
- Increased public support for the protection of marine species and important habitats.
- A stronger young generation with greater concern for marine and coastal sustainability.
Our Commitment
Fifan Foundation is committed to strengthening marine and coastal conservation through education, awareness, behavioral change, citizen science, training, and multi-stakeholder collaboration.
We believe that protecting marine ecosystems requires more than conservation programs alone. It requires informed communities, responsible behavior, strong local capacity, and collective action. Through continuous education and field-based engagement, Fifan Foundation works to support healthier oceans, stronger coastal communities, and a more sustainable future for Indonesia’s marine biodiversity.
